Mona Vale at a glance
Mona Vale sits about 28 kilometres north of the city, in Northern Beaches Council, and was once the administrative centre of Pittwater Council. Aboriginal people knew the area as Bongin Bongin. The land was first surveyed in 1814 and granted to Robert Campbell, and local lore says he named it after a place in Scotland, though where that was remains a mystery.
Houses and apartments are close to evenly balanced here, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 50 to 59.
Mona Vale Beach has a children's pool and a lap pool at its northern end, with the main beach running alongside the golf course and a string of parks and reserves. A second beach to the north, The Basin, is known to bodyboarders for a wave called 'Whomp', and surfers know breaks such as Suck Rock and Rip Bowl.
Mona Vale sits where Mona Vale Road meets Pittwater Road, and the B-Line bus runs from here to Wynyard in the city. The centre has three supermarkets, a library, an RSL club and Mona Vale Hospital. Schools include Mona Vale Public School, Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School and Pittwater High School.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Streets near Pittwater Road and Mona Vale Road trade convenience for traffic and noise. Some low-lying streets near the beach and the golf course need flood and coastal checks. Apartments range widely in age and quality, so strata records, levies and defects come first, while for houses the street and the block matter more than any suburb-wide figure.
