Narraweena at a glance
Narraweena sits in the hills about 18 kilometres north-east of the city, in Northern Beaches Council. The name is said to be Aboriginal for 'a quiet place in the hills', though that meaning is not well sourced. The land was subdivided after the Second World War, and the post office opened in 1953.
It is mostly a suburb of family houses, with few apartments, and most homes are lived in by their owners, though a fair share are rented. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 40 to 49.
Narraweena has a strong Calabrian community, with families from Gizzeria and from Pazzano and their descendants. Since the 1980s the Pazzano community has held the Santo Salvatore festival each year, carrying a statue from the local Catholic church around the suburb and back again.
Buses run to Warringah Mall, Manly, Frenchs Forest and Chatswood, and the 174X runs from Narraweena to Wynyard in the city. Schools include Narraweena Public School and St John the Apostle Catholic School.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Hillside streets can be steep, which affects access, building costs and what you can add later. Narraweena has no beach or rail line of its own, so check how a home connects with the bus routes you will actually use. For a house, the street and the block matter more than any suburb-wide figure.
