About the suburb
North Balgowlah at a glance
North Balgowlah sits about 13 kilometres north-east of the city, in Northern Beaches Council, and shares the postcode 2093 with Balgowlah and Balgowlah Heights. It takes its name from Balgowlah, named in 1832 after an Aboriginal word meaning 'north harbour', for its position on Port Jackson.
It is almost entirely a suburb of family houses, with few apartments, and a large majority of homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 10 to 19.
Manly Dam Memorial Park borders the suburb and can be reached from many of its streets, for bushwalking, kayaking, swimming and water-skiing. Aboriginal sites in the park show the area was home to Aboriginal people long before the suburb was laid out. The dam has picnic areas and a children's playground.
North Balgowlah has a primary school, a community centre, a park and a small group of local shops. Manly's beaches, Stockland Balgowlah and the Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation towards the Spit Bridge and the city are all a short drive away.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Streets close to the main roads trade convenience for traffic and noise. Blocks that back onto the Manly Dam bushland need a bushfire check, and some streets are steep.
