Bilgola Plateau at a glance
Bilgola Plateau sits about 34 kilometres north-east of the city, between Newport and Avalon Beach, in Northern Beaches Council. It was once called Mount Loftus, after the New South Wales governor Lord Augustus Loftus. Its present name comes from Bilgola, from a local Aboriginal word meaning 'swirling water', likely describing Bilgola Beach below.
It is almost entirely a suburb of family houses, and a large majority of homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 10 to 19.
The plateau rises to about 150 metres above sea level, with views of the ocean to the east and Pittwater to the west. Bilgola Beach, on the eastern side, has a surf club and a kiosk, and Avalon Beach, Whale Beach and Palm Beach lie to the north.
It is a quiet, mainly residential suburb. Two small rows of shops, a small park and a primary school sit on top of the plateau, and the larger centres at Newport and Avalon Beach are close by for everything else.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Getting on and off the plateau means winding, steep roads, and many blocks fall away sharply towards the views, which affects access, building costs and what you can add later. Homes backing onto bush need bushfire checks.
