About the suburb
Gordon at a glance
Gordon sits about 14 kilometres north-west of the city and is the administrative centre of Ku-ring-gai Council. Settlement began around 1820, when the area was known as Lane Cove. The name is thought to honour Sir Willoughby Gordon, under whom the surveyor Sir Thomas Mitchell served.
Apartments outnumber houses among the homes that change hands, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 40 to 49.
Gordon station, built in 1888 and kept as an example of an Edwardian station with its gardens, is on the North Shore line, and Pacific Highway sits near the junction of Ryde and Mona Vale roads. Eryldene in McIntosh Street is heritage-listed, and much of the suburb runs along bushland on Stony Creek, home to Sydney's largest colony of flying foxes.
The shops and restaurants are along the Pacific Highway and around the station, including the Gordon Centre. Gordon East Public School and Ravenswood School for Girls are in the suburb, and the Gordon rugby and cricket clubs are a big part of local life.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. The highway and the junctions near the station are busy for much of the day. For apartments, the building is the decision: strata records, levies, defects and planned works all need checking. Homes near the flying fox colony can be noisy at dusk.
