About the suburb
Bayview at a glance
Bayview is a hilly suburb on the southern shore of Pittwater, about 31 kilometres north of the city, in Northern Beaches Council. Its name simply describes its view across Pittwater, the waterway Governor Phillip explored in March 1788 and named after the British prime minister, William Pitt the Younger.
Houses outnumber apartments, with a good share of semi-detached homes and flats among them, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Childless couples are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 70 to 79.
One of the first settlers, Patrick Bryan, built a house in 1821 on the site of today's Bayview Golf Links. Along the water off Pittwater Road, a set of tetrahedron-shaped tank traps survives from the Second World War defence of the Northern Beaches, and parks such as Bayview Baths, Bayview Park and Rowland Reserve line the shore.
Life here leans towards the water. Gibson Marina and Bayview Anchorage Marina have kiosks and restaurants, the Bayview Yacht Racing Association runs learn-to-sail programs, and there are boat ramps at Rowland Reserve, Bayview Park and Riddle Reserve. Bayview has little commercial space of its own, and St Luke's Grammar School teaches Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 here.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. The hills give the views, but also steep driveways and sloping blocks, which affect access, building costs and what you can add later. Waterfront homes are judged quite differently from those up the hill, and homes near bushland need bushfire checks. For apartments and townhouses, strata records, levies and defects come first.
