About the suburb
Beacon Hill at a glance
Beacon Hill sits on high ground about 17 kilometres north-east of the city, in Northern Beaches Council. It takes its name from the trigonometric beacon the Department of Lands built on the hilltop in 1881. The earliest recorded land purchase was in 1857, when Daniel Egan, a member of the NSW Parliament, bought two parcels here.
It is almost entirely a suburb of family houses, with few apartments, and a large majority of homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 10 to 19.
Most houses were built after the Second World War, in the 1950s and 1960s, and many streets carry the names of places where Australians served, such as Kokoda Crescent and Lae Place. Governor Phillip Lookout, on the summit, looks out over much of eastern Sydney, and on New Year's Eve the harbour fireworks can be seen from it.
Warringah Road runs east to west through the suburb, linking it with Dee Why one way and Roseville the other, and buses run through the suburb. From Red Hill, at the northern end, the views reach over the eastern part of Garigal National Park.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Streets close to Warringah Road trade convenience for traffic and noise. Hilltop streets can be steep, which affects access, building costs and what you can add later, and blocks near bushland need a bushfire check.
