Cromer at a glance
Cromer sits about 20 kilometres north-east of the city, in Northern Beaches Council, with Narrabeen Lagoon on its north-eastern edge. It was known as Dee Why West until the Cromer Country Club took over Dee Why Golf Links in 1940 and applied for a new name, after the seaside town of Cromer in Norfolk, England.
It is mainly a suburb of family houses, with some apartments, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 40 to 49.
Cromer Golf Club is the suburb's main sporting ground, with the Arcus Tributary winding across its fairways into Narrabeen Lagoon. Dee Why West Recreation Reserve, between Cromer Heights and the Wakehurst Parkway, is popular for bushwalking and mountain biking. Cromer Park and a string of smaller reserves host weekend sport, from rugby league and soccer to cricket and baseball.
Cromer Heights, on the high ground in the south-west, is a recognised locality within the suburb. Schools include Cromer Public School and the Cromer campus of Northern Beaches Secondary College, and the Warringah Archers club has long been based beside the high school.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Cromer runs from high ground down towards the lagoon, so slope, drainage and flooding vary a lot between streets. Homes near the reserves and bushland need a bushfire check. For a house, the street and the block matter more than any suburb-wide figure.
