Collaroy Plateau at a glance

Collaroy Plateau sits on high ground about 22 kilometres north-east of the city, in Northern Beaches Council, with the postcode 2097. It began as part of Narrabeen and shares its name with Collaroy, after the steamer Collaroy that ran aground nearby in 1881. It was named a suburb in 1977, became a locality within Collaroy in 1984, and was re-established as a suburb in 2011 after community lobbying.

It is almost entirely a suburb of family houses, with few apartments, and a large majority of homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 40 to 49.

From the plateau the views run over Collaroy, Long Reef and Narrabeen beaches and Narrabeen Lagoon. During the Second World War an RAAF radar station operated here, and on 3 October 1945 Joseph Lade Pawsey made Australia's first successful detection of radio waves from the sun at the station in Plateau Park. The photographer and filmmaker Frank Hurley lived here until his death in 1962.

Plateau Park, McLeans Lookout, the Edgar Gornall Wildflower Garden and Anzac Avenue Reserve are all in the suburb, and Vic Huxley Oval is home to the Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club, founded in 1955. Collaroy Plateau Public School is here, along with several preschools, and buses are the main public transport.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. The edges of the plateau fall away steeply, so slope, access and building costs vary a lot from street to street, and a view can depend on what the neighbours build. Blocks beside bushland need a bushfire check.
