About the suburb
Collaroy at a glance
Collaroy sits on the coast about 22 kilometres north-east of the city, in Northern Beaches Council. It was once part of Narrabeen and was renamed after the SS Collaroy ran aground on the beach in 1881. The ship's anchor has been on display at Narrabeen Lakes Public School since 1928.
Apartments outnumber houses, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Childless couples are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 50 to 59.
The beach joins Narrabeen Beach at Wetherill Street to form one continuous surf beach of 3.4 kilometres, patrolled by four surf lifesaving clubs. Most of the suburb was developed after the mid-20th century, and locals often call it 'The Roy'. Dolphins and whales are seen offshore during their migrations.
Pittwater Road runs north to south through the suburb and carries the shopping strip, with cafes, a cinema, the Collaroy Services club and The Collaroy hotel. Buses run south to Manly and the city and north to Palm Beach. The Salvation Army runs one of its largest conference and outdoor education centres here.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. The beachfront is exposed: storms in June 2016 damaged a strip of houses on Pittwater Road, so homes near the sand need coastal erosion checks. Pittwater Road is busy, and noise changes from street to street. For apartments, strata records, levies and defects come first.
