Narrabeen at a glance

Narrabeen is a beachside suburb about 23 kilometres north-east of the city, in Northern Beaches Council. The name was in use by 1801, when records mention a 'Narrobine Creek'. Its origin is debated: one account says it means 'source of fresh water', and the most popular links it to a young Aboriginal girl named Narrabine.

Apartments far outnumber houses, and about half of homes are lived in by their owners. Childless couples are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 30 to 39.

Narrabeen Lagoon, fed by five creeks, is circled by the 8.6 kilometre Narrabeen Lagoon Trail. A tram extension in 1913 made the area popular for holidays and camping. In 2005 workers uncovered the 4,000 year old remains of a man now known as Narrabeen Man, and today the Sydney Institute of Sport and the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles are based here.

The Wakehurst Parkway, opened in 1946, links the area directly to Frenchs Forest and Seaforth, and Ocean Street crosses the lagoon mouth on a bridge first built in 1925. Schools include Narrabeen Lakes Public School, North Narrabeen Public School, St Joseph's Catholic Primary School and Narrabeen Sports High School.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. The beaches here regularly suffer storm damage and erosion, so beachfront homes need coastal checks, and streets near the lagoon need flood checks. For apartments, strata records, levies and defects come first. And because few houses change hands here, treat the house figures in the statistics box as a guide, not a price.
