Curl Curl at a glance

Curl Curl is a small coastal suburb about 18 kilometres north-east of the city, in Northern Beaches Council. Its name appears to be the original Aboriginal name for a wider area, possibly from the Dharuk 'curial curial', meaning river of life. Curl Curl Lagoon and Greendale Creek separate it from North Curl Curl.

It is mostly family houses, with some apartments, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 10 to 19.

The beach is known for its surf and is patrolled by the South Curl Curl and North Curl Curl surf clubs, founded in 1918 and 1922, with a rock pool at each end. During the 20th century the lagoon declined into a rubbish tip, and since 1980 Curl Curl Lagoon Friends have worked to restore it. Stewart House, opposite the southern beach, hosts public school children in need.

Buses run to Manly, Warringah Mall, Frenchs Forest and, from South Curl Curl, the city. Freshwater Senior Campus and the selective Manly Campus are both on Harbord Road, and Curl Curl North Public School is on Playfair Road. Parks, playing fields and two dog parks line the lagoon and creek.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. The parks by the lagoon sit on low, swampy land reclaimed in the 1950s and 1960s, so homes near the lagoon and creek need flood and drainage checks. Streets near the beach fill with visitors on summer weekends. And because few houses change hands in a suburb this small, treat the figures in the statistics box as a guide, not a price.
