Davidson at a glance

Davidson sits about 20 kilometres north of the city, in Northern Beaches Council, on the eastern edge of Garigal National Park. It is named after Sir Walter Davidson, Governor of New South Wales from 1918 to 1923, after a park was dedicated to him in 1923.

It is almost entirely a suburb of family houses, and nearly all homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 10 to 19.

The area began as a quarry, and homes were built from the late 1970s. Parks and reserves cover over a third of the suburb, eucalypts and liquid ambers line the streets, and each December the Davidson Lights draw visitors to Borgnis Street. The local rural fire brigade has been based here since 1976.

Buses are the only public transport, with routes to the city and Chatswood, and a change at Forest Way for Manly. Kambora Public School and St Martin De Porres Catholic Primary School are in the suburb, and Davidson High School, though named after it, is in Frenchs Forest. A small group of shops sits at Yindela Street and Pound Avenue.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. The national park is the draw, and it also means bushfire planning matters. Some streets, such as Stone Parade, Borgnis Street and Maitland Street, are steep, which affects access and what you can add later.
