Killarney Heights at a glance
Killarney Heights sits on a peninsula about 12 kilometres north-east of the city, in Northern Beaches Council, with Middle Harbour to the south-west and Bantry Bay to the east. The name comes from Killarney, a town in County Kerry in Ireland.
It is almost entirely a suburb of family houses, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 10 to 19.
It was once part of Forestville. Much of it was developed in the early 1960s, and its post office opened in 1965. Parks and bushland cover more than half the suburb, and heritage sites include the Bantry Bay Explosives Depot, Flat Rock Landing, the Killarney Picnic Grounds and the Old Bullock Track.
Road access is via Warringah Road, and the drive to the city takes about 20 minutes outside peak hours. Buses run to the city and Chatswood. Killarney Heights Primary School, with its English and French bilingual program, sits across from the oval, and Killarney Heights High School is next to it on Starkey Street.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. On a peninsula ringed by bush, bushfire planning matters, and many blocks slope towards the water or the bush. Traffic funnels out through a few roads to Warringah Road. For each house, the street, the slope and the block matter more than any suburb-wide figure.
