About the suburb
Forestville at a glance
Forestville sits about 12 kilometres north of the city, in Northern Beaches Council, where the North Shore meets the Northern Beaches, with Middle Harbour to the south. Its name means 'town in the forest'. James French settled here in 1856 and shipped timber to Sydney from a small wharf on Bantry Bay.
It is mainly a suburb of family houses, with some apartments, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 10 to 19.
After the First World War the land was settled by returned servicemen as small farms, with mixed success, and the post office, opened in 1920, took the Forestville name in 1947. Garigal National Park borders the suburb to the east and west, and parks and reserves cover about a third of it.
Warringah Road is the main road, and buses run to the city, Chatswood, Dee Why and Warringah Mall. Forestville Village Shops on Darley and Starkey Streets has a Coles. Primary schools include Forestville Public School, Our Lady of Good Counsel and Forestville Montessori School, and Killarney Heights High School is the nearest high school.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Warringah Road carries heavy traffic, and homes close to it trade convenience for noise. Streets that back onto the national park need a bushfire check, and many blocks slope towards the bush. For apartments, strata records, levies and defects come first.
