Terrey Hills at a glance

Terrey Hills sits about 25 kilometres north of the city, in Northern Beaches Council, on Mona Vale Road. It is named after two early landholders, Obediah James Terrey, who took up land here in 1881, and Samuel Hills, who owned land nearby. The post office opened in 1935.

It is mostly a suburb of family houses, with few apartments, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 50 to 59.

In the Depression, laterite quarried here was used for early roads, earning Terrey Hills the name 'laterite capital' of the Sydney Basin; the old quarry is now the playing field. Aboriginal rock carvings near Larool Road show kangaroos, figures and footprints. Two golf courses, tennis centres and BMX tracks add to the open, semi-rural feel.

Mona Vale Road runs through the suburb and meets Forest Way. Buses run to the city, Chatswood, Gordon, Macquarie Park, North Sydney, Mona Vale and Manly. The village has a grocer, post office, shops, restaurants and plant suppliers. Schools include Terrey Hills Public School, Northern Beaches Christian School, Kinma School, the Sydney Japanese School and the German International School Sydney.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Mona Vale Road is busy, and homes near it trade access for traffic noise. Larger semi-rural blocks need a bushfire check and careful due diligence on what can be built. And because few houses change hands here, treat the figures in the statistics box as a guide, not a price.
