Northbridge at a glance

Northbridge sits on a peninsula reaching into Middle Harbour, about six kilometres north of the city, in Willoughby Council. Surrounded by bush and water on three sides, it has no through traffic, and Chatswood is about three kilometres to the north-west.

It is mainly a suburb of houses, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 10 to 19.

The suburb takes its name from the sandstone suspension bridge built in 1892 to open the land to buyers, now a recognised symbol of the area. Sydney jeweller William Twemlow bought the land in 1868, and Northbridge celebrated its centenary in 2013.

Parks and reserves cover more than a quarter of the suburb, and the bush and water on three sides are a large part of its appeal for families.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. On a peninsula, traffic funnels through a few roads, and the bridge is the main way in from the south. Many blocks slope towards the water, which affects access, building costs and what you can add later. Waterfront homes are judged quite differently from the rest, so every house needs its own evidence.
