Cammeray at a glance

Cammeray is a residential suburb in North Sydney Council, named after the Cammeraygal people. Shell middens at Folly Point and cave paintings in Primrose Park show that Aboriginal people lived here at least 5,800 years ago.

Apartments outnumber houses, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Childless couples are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 30 to 39.

It was slow to develop because of its steep land and distance from transport. The 1892 suspension bridge to Northbridge and, later, the tram along Miller Street opened it up, estates followed through the 1920s and 1930s, and many waterfront houses were built from the 1940s.

The Warringah Freeway, built through the area in the 1960s, still divides the suburb, with crossings only at West, Miller, Ernest and Falcon Streets. Parks and reserves cover about a quarter of Cammeray.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Which side of the freeway you are on, and how close, shapes noise and how you get around. Steep streets and sloping blocks affect access, building costs and what you can add later. For apartments, strata records, levies and defects come first.
