Crows Nest at a glance

Crows Nest sits about five kilometres north of the city, in North Sydney Council. Its name comes from the 'Crow's Nest' cottage Edward Wollstonecraft built on his land grant of 1821, chosen, his partner Alexander Berry said, for its elevated and commanding position.

Apartments far outnumber houses, and just under half of homes are lived in by their owners. Childless couples are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 30 to 39.

The village centre is known for its shops and restaurants, gathered around a junction of five main roads. Crows Nest metro station opened in August 2024, and St Leonards station is close by.

There is real history in the streets. The gates of Crow's Nest House still stand at the Pacific Highway entrance to North Sydney Demonstration School, and St Thomas Rest Park, the north shore's first burial ground, holds the tomb of Alexander Berry. North Sydney Girls High School and North Sydney Boys High School are both in the suburb.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. The Warringah Freeway runs along the northern border and the Pacific Highway along the western one, so noise and traffic vary from street to street. Apartment buildings vary widely in age and quality, so strata records, levies and defects come first. For houses, the street and the block matter more than any suburb-wide figure.
