North Sydney at a glance
North Sydney sits on the harbour about three kilometres north of the city, across the Harbour Bridge, and is the administrative centre of North Sydney Council. It is also a business district, with the second largest concentration of office buildings in New South Wales and Miller Street at its centre.
Most homes here are apartments, with a much smaller number of houses, and most homes are rented rather than lived in by their owners. Childless couples are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 30 to 39.
With so many apartment buildings there is real choice, but quality varies a great deal from building to building. Houses are another matter: they come up rarely, and for the right one, being known to the people who hear first matters a great deal.
The township here was laid out in 1836 as St Leonards and took the name North Sydney in 1890. North Sydney station is on the North Shore line, and Victoria Cross metro station, two blocks to the north, opened in August 2024. Ferries run from the wharf on High Street, and the Warringah Freeway carries traffic south to the city and north to Chatswood.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. With so many units, the building matters more than the suburb: strata records, levies, defects and what the owners' corporation has planned all need checking before you bid. Office towers, the freeway and new construction shape some streets far more than others, so we look at noise, outlook and what could be built next door. And because so few houses change hands, treat the house figures in the statistics box as a guide, not a price.
