About the suburb
Neutral Bay at a glance
Neutral Bay sits on Sydney Harbour about one and a half kilometres north of the city, in North Sydney Council. Its name goes back to 1789, when Governor Phillip set the bay aside as a neutral harbour where foreign ships could anchor, far enough from Sydney Cove to keep them at a distance.
Most homes here are apartments, with a smaller number of houses, and just under half of homes are lived in by their owners. Childless couples are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 30 to 39.
In the early 1900s Neutral Bay drew people who liked the Arts and Crafts style of building, and several heritage-listed homes from that period survive in the area. The children's author May Gibbs lived here before moving to Nutcote nearby.
Life centres on Neutral Bay Junction along Military Road, with shops, restaurants and the Oaks Hotel, which opened in 1885. Ferries run from the wharf at the end of Hayes Street, and Military Road carries buses to the city.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Military Road is busy, and noise and traffic change a lot from street to street. Apartment buildings vary widely in age and quality, so strata records, levies and defects come first. For houses, the street and the block matter more than any suburb-wide figure.
