About the suburb
Cremorne at a glance
Cremorne sits about six kilometres north-east of the city, between Neutral Bay and Mosman, in North Sydney Council. Cremorne Point, a separate small suburb, lies immediately to the south.
Apartments far outnumber houses, and about half of homes are lived in by their owners. Childless couples are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 30 to 39.
The name comes from the Cremorne Gardens in London. Several homes are on the State Heritage Register, among them Belvedere and Egglemont in Cranbrook Avenue and Dalkeith in Bannerman Street, and SCEGGS Redlands is on Military Road.
Life centres on Cremorne Junction along Military Road, with a supermarket, restaurants and the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, an Art Deco cinema from 1935 with a Wurlitzer organ. Buses along Military Road run to the city and to North Sydney.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Streets close to Military Road trade convenience for traffic and noise. In an apartment, the building comes first: strata records, levies and defects. For a house, the street and the block matter more than any suburb-wide figure.
