About the suburb

Mosman at a glance

Mosman sits about eight kilometres north-east of the city and is the administrative centre of Mosman Council. It takes in the traditional localities of Balmoral, Beauty Point, Clifton Gardens, Georges Heights, Spit Junction and The Spit.

It is a large suburb with more apartments than houses, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 50 to 59.

The name comes from Archibald Mosman and his twin brother George, who arrived in 1831 and founded a whaling station on what became Mosman Bay. Later, the artists' camps of Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and others earned Mosman the name 'Australia's most painted suburb'.

The harbour shapes daily life here. Taronga Zoo opened in 1916, and the old defence sites at Middle Head, Georges Head and Bradleys Head recall Mosman's long role in guarding the harbour. Parks cover nearly a third of the suburb.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Mosman is really several suburbs in one, from harbourfront streets to family streets and apartment pockets, and each needs judging on its own terms. Traffic on Military Road shapes some streets far more than others. For apartments, strata records, levies and defects come first; for houses, every one needs its own evidence.
