Lindfield at a glance

Lindfield sits about 13 kilometres north-west of the city in Ku-ring-gai Council, with the postcode 2070. The name means a clearing in the lime forest and comes from a cottage built by an early landowner, Francis List. East Lindfield is a separate suburb with the same postcode.

Its homes are a mix of family houses and apartments, and most are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 40 to 49.

Convicts ran a government timber camp here from around 1810, and fruit growing and farming followed. The railway station opened in 1890 and the suburb grew around it. Much of the housing is Federation and California bungalow, in double brick and tile, and bushland in Garigal and Lane Cove national parks borders the suburb.

The shops run along the Pacific Highway, Lindfield shopping village and Tryon Road. Lindfield Public School, Lindfield East Public School, Holy Family Catholic Primary School, Masada College and Newington College's preparatory school are all here, Killara High School is close by, and the former university campus on Eton Road reopened in 2019 as the Lindfield Learning Village.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Most of the apartments sit close to the Pacific Highway and the railway, so noise and outlook vary a lot from building to building. Older brick homes need a careful look at what has been added over the years. And the new state planning rules allow more apartments near the station, so it is worth knowing what is planned around a home before you buy.
