North Turramurra at a glance

North Turramurra sits about 20 kilometres north-west of the city and is the northern edge of Ku-ring-gai Council. It lies on a narrow spur between Lovers Jump Creek and Cowan Creek, which run down through Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.

It is mostly a suburb of houses, and most are lived in by their owners. Childless couples are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 80 to 89.

The area was once orchards along what was then called Eastern Road. On the bush edge stands a sandstone replica of the Great Sphinx, carved in the 1920s by William Shirley, a returned soldier, in memory of his fallen comrades. The suburb is a starting point for walks to Bobbin Head and the upper reaches of Cowan Creek, and wallabies are a common sight.

The shopping village on Bobbin Head Road has a supermarket, a post office and cafes. Turramurra North Public School and Ku-ring-gai High School are in the suburb. Turramurra is the nearest station, with buses running from it.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. The bushland that makes North Turramurra special also brings a bushfire risk each summer, so bushfire ratings and building rules come first. It is a long way from the city, and most trips start with a bus or a car. Some homes here are in retirement villages, which come with their own contracts and rules.
