Turramurra at a glance
Turramurra sits about 16 kilometres north-west of the city in Ku-ring-gai Council and shares the postcode 2074 with North Turramurra, South Turramurra and Warrawee. The name is an Aboriginal word thought to mean high hill or high place, and the suburb sits around 170 metres above sea level.
It is mostly a suburb of family houses, with some apartments, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 40 to 49.
Ingleholme in Boomerang Street, designed by the architect John Sulman as his own home around 1896, is on the State Heritage Register. On the border with Pymble, Sheldon Forest holds some of the best remaining blue gum and turpentine forest.
Turramurra station is on the North Shore line, and the main shops are along the Pacific Highway and Rohini Street beside it, with smaller groups of shops in East Turramurra. Turramurra Public School and Warrawee Public School are close by, Turramurra High School is in South Turramurra, and Turramurra Memorial Park and Kent Oval are the main sporting grounds.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. The Pacific Highway is busy, and homes beside it hear it. The hilly ground means many blocks slope, which affects access, drainage and building costs. On the bush edges, bushfire planning is part of the checks.
