South Turramurra at a glance
South Turramurra sits about 18 kilometres north-west of the city in Ku-ring-gai Council. It is a leafy suburb surrounded on three sides by the upper reaches of Lane Cove National Park, with the Great North Walk and trails through to North Epping, Marsfield and West Pymble.
It is a suburb of family houses, and a large majority are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 10 to 19.
In the early 1990s, local residents formed a coalition to fight a planned freeway extension through the Lane Cove Valley, and the bushland around the suburb survives today. South Turramurra Shopping Village sits on the corner of Auluba Road and Kissing Point Road.
Turramurra is the nearest station, linked by buses along Kissing Point Road, with one route running on to Macquarie University. Turramurra High School is in the suburb, Turramurra Public School is close by, and Auluba Oval and the Canoon Road courts are the local sporting grounds.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. With bush on three sides, bushfire ratings and building rules need checking on many blocks. There is no station, so the car and the bus do most of the work. Some streets fall steeply towards the creeks, which affects access and drainage.
