About the suburb

Wheeler Heights at a glance

Wheeler Heights is a small hillside suburb in Northern Beaches Council, on the western side of Collaroy Plateau, above Cromer and Dee Why. It takes its name from its school. Collaroy Plateau West Primary School opened in 1961 and was renamed Wheeler Heights Public School in 1969, at the suggestion of teacher Stan Walters, who had an interest in local history.

It is mostly a suburb of family houses, with few apartments, and a large majority of homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 40 to 49.

Once the school had its new name, locals began using it for the surrounding streets and the shops on South Creek Road. The Geographical Names Board registered Wheeler Heights as a suburb in 1977, reclassified it as an urban place in 2002, and restored it in 2010 after a community campaign called Save our Suburbs. For a suburb of about one square kilometre, it has ten parks.

Daily life centres on Wheeler Heights Public School and the shopping strip on South Creek Road. The streets are almost all residential, and many end in cul-de-sacs. The beaches at Collaroy and Dee Why, and Narrabeen Lagoon, are a short drive away.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. On a hillside, slope changes from street to street, which affects access, drainage, building costs and what you can add later. Homes beside bushland reserves need a bushfire check. With few apartments here, treat the apartment figures in the statistics box as a guide, not a price.
