About the suburb
Allambie Heights at a glance
Allambie Heights sits about 18 kilometres north-east of the city, in Northern Beaches Council. Its name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning 'peaceful place', and an estate of that name was subdivided in 1918. A track roughly following today's Allambie Road was probably used by Aboriginal people to reach the ocean beaches at Manly.
It is a suburb of family houses, with only a small number of apartments, and most homes are lived in by their owners. Couples with children are the largest household group, and the most common age group is 40 to 49.
Most of the suburb was built in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and many streets carry the names of Second World War battles and Allied leaders, such as Tobruk Avenue, Anzio Avenue and Churchill Crescent. Bush surrounds it, with Manly Dam Reserve to the south, Garigal National Park to the west and Allenby Park to the north. Gumbooya Reserve holds Aboriginal rock carvings.
The small shopping area sits beside the community centre and Allambie Heights Public School. Arranounbai School and The Beach School are also here, along with several retirement villages, including Scalabrini Village and Fred Hutley Village. Allambie Road is the main way through the suburb, linking it with Manly Vale and Frenchs Forest.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Bushfires have damaged bushland around the suburb in recent years, so check whether a block is mapped as bushfire-prone, as that shapes building rules and insurance. Homes backing onto the reserves need their own look at slope and access.
