About the suburb

Hunters Hill at a glance

Hunters Hill sits on a small peninsula between the Lane Cove and Parramatta rivers, about nine kilometres north-west of the city, and is the administrative centre of the Municipality of Hunter's Hill. Its 26 parks and reserves cover about a sixth of the suburb.

It is mainly houses, and most homes are lived in by their owners. More than half of households are couples with children, and the most common age group is 10 to 19.

The houses here vary enormously, so a suburb-wide figure says little about any one of them. Owners tend to stay for many years, and every house needs judging on its own evidence.

The suburb is named after John Hunter, the second Governor of New South Wales, and was settled from 1835. From 1847 the Frenchman Didier Numa Joubert bought about 200 acres and built many of the early sandstone houses with stonemasons from Italy, which earned it the name the French Village. It was proclaimed a municipality in 1861. Buses run through the suburb, and ferries call at Valentia Street, Woolwich and Huntleys Point wharves.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. There is no railway, so most journeys are by car, bus or ferry. Many houses carry heritage controls that protect the streets but limit what you can change, so we check them before you fall for a renovation idea. And with houses this varied, we judge each one on its own evidence.
