About the suburb
Lane Cove at a glance
Lane Cove sits on a peninsula at the opening of the Lane Cove River, about nine kilometres north-west of the city, and is the administrative centre of Lane Cove Council. Chatswood is about three kilometres away and Macquarie Park about four.
Apartments outnumber houses, but it remains a family suburb: couples with children are the largest household group, most homes are lived in by their owners, and the most common age group is 30 to 39.
Much of Lane Cove was built after the Second World War, when returned servicemen were granted blocks of land here. Water views, large suburban blocks and quiet streets made it popular in the decades that followed.
The village centre has a pedestrian plaza where Burns Bay Road meets Longueville Road, with supermarkets, cafes and restaurants. Lane Cove North and Lane Cove West are separate suburbs.
The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. Apartments and houses here are very different propositions. For an apartment the building comes first: strata records, levies and defects. For a house, the street, the slope and the block matter more than any suburb-wide figure.
