About the suburb

Longueville at a glance

Longueville sits on a peninsula between Tambourine Bay and Woodford Bay on the Lane Cove River, about eight kilometres north-west of the city in the Municipality of Lane Cove. It covers about one square kilometre, and its 14 parks and reserves take up about a fifth of it.

It is a suburb of houses. Almost every home is a separate house, in styles from Victorian and Federation to Californian bungalows, weatherboard cottages and contemporary waterfront homes. Most homes are lived in by their owners, and most households are couples with children.

People stay. Owners tend to hold their homes for many years, and a good share change hands without a public campaign. If you want to buy here, you need to be known to the people who hear first.

Residential development began in the 1870s, and Longueville was proclaimed a suburb in the 1920s. The origin of the name is uncertain; one popular story links it to the Duc de Longueville. The Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff Club races from the end of the peninsula, ferries call at Longueville wharf, and the 261 bus runs to Lane Cove and King Street Wharf in the city.

The trade-offs are worth saying plainly. On a peninsula, traffic funnels through a few streets and the bus is the main public transport. Waterfront and view homes are judged quite differently from the rest, and many blocks slope, which affects access, building costs and what you can add later. In a suburb this small, a few results can swing the numbers, so treat the statistics box as a guide, not a price.
